Virginia Unemployment Application

To file a Virginia unemployment application, applicants are encouraged to apply online at http://www.vec.virginia.gov/vecportal/seeker/jslogin.cfm.  Following the directions online, you will be asked to establish a username and password with the Virginia Employment Commission online claim services.  Directions are available in both English and Spanish when filling out a Virginia unemployment application.  This option is recommended because it is easier to reach the Virginia Unemployment Commission online than it is by telephone.

If you must apply by telephone when you decide to fill out a Virginia unemployment application, you can call the toll free number at 1-866-832-2363.  If your social security number ends with an odd number, the Virginia Employment Commission asks that you call the center to apply for Virginia unemployment on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.  If your social security number ends with an even number, the Commission asks that you call the center to apply for unemployment on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. The center is also open from 8:15 am to noon on Saturday.

For customers who are deaf or hard of hearing, you may call the Virginia Relay Center by TTY.  The Virginia Relay Center number is 1-800-828-1120.

Although applying online is recommended, filing your Virginia unemployment application by phone or TTY will not affect the amount of your unemployment benefit, nor will it delay the processing of your claim for unemployment benefits.
